From Victorian-Era Fashion to Victoria’s Secret: Our Guide to Corset Tops

Breaking Down the Anatomy & History of a Classic Silhouette

There’s something decidedly feminist about wearing a corset in 2024. It’s more than a trend, it’s a movement. Today, corsets have come to represent a confidently empowered assertion of sexy on your own terms.

From the runways to the streets to the screens and pop culture, corsets and bustiers are enjoying a renaissance in fashion. Women are just as likely to wear a top out with a pair of jeans as they are to select them for a special lingerie look.

Here at Victoria’s Secret, we’ve spent the past few decades or so revolutionizing the concept of underwear as outerwear, and just as long refining our corsetry. Whether you’re showing it off or keeping it to yourself, read on to learn more about the history and craftsmanship behind our classic corset top.

The History

From the 1600s through the early 20th century, corsets were viewed as an essential piece of shapewear worn by women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds—meant to be kept strictly unseen under clothing. Historically, women wore corsets to modify their figure, nip in the waist, and support the bust.

Thankfully, corsets have loosened up over time and are more about celebrating the female form. Our classic corset provides that timeless, figure-enhancing support you love, while still allowing you to move and breathe comfortably.

The Boning

Providing structure to the corset, this part helps to sculpt the body and accentuate your natural shape. Once upon a time, original “stays” were made from rigid materials like steel or whalebone. Deep breath: Modern boning is way more flexible, created from fiberglass or sometimes gel.

The Neckline

Designed to flatter the bust and enhance your cleavage, our elegant portrait cut features wide-set straps showcasing a gentle scoop neckline for a timeless look. It’s cut high at the underarms to provide extra-smoothing support around the body.

The Hook & Eye Details

A row of delicate closures trailing up the front lends a certain 90s-Y2K feel to the style. It was a key detail in vintage Victoria’s Secret Gold Label corsets. Style tip: Undo the top 2-3 hooks for a super-sexy vibe.

The Lace-Up

Here’s where you get to customize your fit. In back, reinforced metal grommets (or eyelets) are laced together with satin ribbon for a luxe touch. Cinch the corset tighter to accentuate an hourglass, snatched-waist look. Or wear it open and looser for a more natural look.

The Fabric

Our classic corset has become a fast favorite in luxe satin with a hint of stretch. This season, we’re offering an array of new materials like faux patent leather and delicate, Swiss-designed embroidery on tulle. You’ll also see it enter in our customer-favorite Feathersoft fabric for more of an everyday look.
